Robert J. Moraca, MD has been installed as the President of the ECTSS for 2015-2016.
Dr. Moraca is an accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon at the Allegheny Health Network Cardiovascular Institute at Allegheny General Hospital. He is the Surgical Director of Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy Program, Director of Thoracic Aortic and Arrhythmia Surgery, and Director of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Service.
Dr. Moraca is board-certified with both the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He offers expertise in, complex coronary artery revascularization, endovascular and open aortic surgery, transcatheter aortic valve repair (TAVR), arrhythmia surgery, valve repair, ECMO, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy and heart and lung transplantation. In addition, he practices minimally invasive approaches to valvular heart disease and atrial fibrillation.
Recognized for his research by several organizations, Dr. Moraca has received the Patterson Surgical Research Grant and has been honored with a research grant from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) for the study of ECMO. He is a funded co-investigator for the National Institutes of Health and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and authored several book chapters.
He received his medical degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pa., and his Bachelor of Science Degree from The Military College of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. Dr. Moraca completed his surgical internship and residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center, surgical research fellowship at Benaroya Research Institute & Fred Hutchinson Cancer Institute, and cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Washington’s University’s Barnes-Jewish Hospital. He is associated with several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgery, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, and Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society.
