Abbas El-Sayed Abbas, MD has been installed as the President of the ECTSS for 2017-2018.
Dr. Abbas is Professor and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Temple University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Board certified in thoracic surgery, Dr. Abbas specializes in minimally invasive and robotic thoroacic surgery, including robotic esophagectomy- a procedure that is provided at only a few select hospitals nationwide.
Other areas of specialization include endoscopic procedures for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), esophageal and bronchial stents, laser endoscopy, and cryoendoscopy. His research interests include outcome-based research in robotic surgery, gene therapy for esophageal and lung cancer. and transplant immunology.
Dr. Abbas earned his medical degree and a master’s degree from Ain-Shams School of Medicine in Egypt. He completed his surgical residency at Ain-Shams University Hospital in Egypt and served as a surgical resident at Pinnacle Health in Harrisburg, PA.
He completed his general surgery residency at Pennsylvania Hospital, part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia. He later completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Following his fellowship, Dr. Abbas served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He was then appointed Director and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans.
Dr. Abbas has received several awards and recognition’s for his clinical and teaching skills, including “Best Doctors in Louisiana” for three consecutive years. He has also published numerous peer-reviewed articles and abstracts and is an outstanding member of ECTSS.
